Album Review

Largely lacking co-leader Chris Bell, Big Star's second album also lacked something of the pop sweetness (especially the harmonies) of #1 Record. What it possessed was Alex Chilton's urgency (sometimes desperation) on songs that made his case as a genuine rock & roll eccentric. If #1 Record had a certain pop perfection that brought everything together, Radio City was the sound of everything falling apart, which proved at least as compelling.

This is the best Big Star album in my opinion. The guitars chime, dazzle and ring out in every song!

I love Big Star's first record - kinda folk-rock overtones and beautiful harmonies. Their third album 'Sister Lovers' is a different story altogether - a truly strange record with some extremely melancholy songs goin on! 'Radio City' however is a truly inspirational record with some excellent power pop songs with BITE!! I'm sure this is the favourite album of many a fan of Big Star. Alex Chilton's voice is urgent at times, and gently soulful on other occasions. Stand out tracks have to be 'Way out West'. 'What's goin' Ahn' and the truly sublime pop of 'September Gurls'.

The power of this record is truly amazing - from the boom of the tom-toms and the bass through to the layers of lush chiming guitars - both electric and acoustic. Highly recommended.

The quintessential American power pop band, Big Star remains one of the most mythic and influential cult acts in all of rock & roll.
