EDITORS’ NOTES

Joshua Hedley is one of the latest country acts signed to Jack White's Third Man Records, after the quietly successful Margo Price. Like Price, Hedley seems to have been plucked out of an imaginary past, where countrypolitan sheen meets an outsider's edge. With Mr. Jukebox, his debut album for the label, he's just as convincing singing heartbroken honky-tonk on "Counting All My Tears" or venturing into borderline-psychedelic cowboy territory on "Weird Thought Thinker." Tying it all together is a touching cover of the '40s Disney standard "When You Wish Upon a Star," which recalls Willie Nelson at his tenderest.

About Joshua Hedley

A proud throwback to the classic country of the 1960s, Joshua Hedley released his debut album, Mr. Jukebox, in 2018 after gaining a reputation as a bandleader in Nashville. Born and raised in Florida, he began playing fiddle when he was nine, picking up other instruments as he grew older. At the age of 19, he headed to Nashville, where he started playing regularly at Robert's Western World. He started to make connections throughout the Music City, supporting such artists as Robert Ellis, Justin Townes Earle, and Jonny Fritz. After years of acting as a sideman, Hedley eventually started composing original material when he was nearly 30. These original songs formed the core of Mr. Jukebox, the 2018 debut he released on Third Man Records. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
