Album Review

The Stairs are a hard band to figure out — while one would hope that their shameless imitations of British Invasion and '60s pop were entirely tongue-in-cheek, the liner to Mexican R&B claims (with apparent seriousness) that this is actually the sound of the present. Either way, the band doesn't fare well: if they really are kidding, their mono recreations of times past are too accurate to carry any humor — and if they're simply holding onto a worthwhile sound whose time has passed, their blatant theft of entire riffs from the Who and the Byrds keeps them from achieving anything remotely valuable.

Top album

I was fortunate enough to see The Stairs many times playing live in Liverpool in the '90s. This album has shaped the sound of today's famous Scouse bands, most notably The Zutons and The Coral - they've even alluded to that themselves in press interviews. Weed Bus, Mary Joanna, Sweet Thing, Woman Gone Say Goodbye, Flying Machine, Sometimes the World Escapes Me - all top tracks. Whoever wrote the official iTunes review above is completely missing the point. It's a celebration of music gone by, with a bit of Scouse humour thrown in for good measure. Brilliant album.

The Stairs are Gods

Mary Joanna, Mr Window Pane, Weed Bus & Woman Gone and Say Goodbye are among the greatest songs I've ever heard. Yeah, Mexican R'n'B is a very derivitive album but so what? Good songs are good songs no matter and how many debut albums contain 17 killer tracks (not including the Intro & Outro)?

A unique, classic work of sheer genius

This is an album that needs a few playings, but with each listen, it becomes more apparent that this is something truly special. A unique, one off creation, that will be a classic forevermore, Mexican R 'n' B, should be a must in the top 100 albums to buy before you die. Give it a chance and you will be hooked!
