Album Review

Music Is Better Than Words is a traditional big-band album from Seth MacFarlane, the wise-ass behind Family Guy. MacFarlane plays it straight throughout Music Is Better Than Words, hiring American Dad composer Joel McNeely to create approximations of Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins, and Billy May's arrangements for Frank Sinatra's deathless, mid-century records for Capitol. These classic concept albums are clearly the blueprint for Music Is Better Than Words which was, after all, recorded at Capitol Records' legendary studio with MacFarlane singing into the very same microphone Sinatra used all those years ago, and there is a bit of a concept to this 2011 LP, too, with the cartoonist selecting songs never recorded by any member of the Rat Pack — along with a couple recent tunes like “She’s Wonderful Too,” which McNeely originally wrote for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles — for his tribute to that ring-a-ding-ding swing. MacFarlane and McNeely don’t attempt to ape the pizzazz of Frank’s Reprise years, nor do they spend much time with May’s snazzy snap, they stick with Riddle and Jenkins, keeping things sentimental and lush even when the words crackle with wit.

This Album is BETTER than words

Seth Macfarlane is the funny guy behind Family Guy and the movie TED,, Not the obvious choice for an album of (mostly) standards executed in the style of Frank, Dean, Bobby, Sammy and Andy Williams with a Billy May inspired big band,. complete with lusher than lush arrangements. You think "This has to be a send up? a joke? right? But, let me tell you.. this album is as straight as can be and as such, the guys knowledge and love of this music (and talent) shines through like a beacon. It's wonderful.
Great song choices help,, show standards are not mere cover versions 'The Night They Invented Champagne' (Gigi), Something Good ( Sound of Music) and 'Sadder but Wiser Girl for me' (Music Man) along with standards like Two Sleepy People and Laura. Every track is a gem of re-interpretation . Helped out by Norah Jones and Sara Barieilles this is a treat,.. I may not be a BIG fan of his humour but I will be looking out for and his next musical venture. A surprise and I'll be wearing a smile for a week.. what more could you ask. Let's make this guy a star.

Fresh and Amazing!

A beautiful album put together by a man who appreciation for the Big Band Swing shines through. I do hope that Seth MacFarlane turns out another album in the near future like this one

Not bad, not bad at all...

Pretty good, I really like this kind of music and next time I have an iTunes card, I am defiantly buying this album! :)

In 2005 he released Family Guy: Live in Vegas, a collection of songs from the show along with some original numbers. In 2009 he sang at the BBC Proms in London during their Celebration of Classic MGM Film...
