Album Review

Music Is Better Than Words is a traditional big-band album from Seth MacFarlane, the wise-ass behind Family Guy. MacFarlane plays it straight throughout Music Is Better Than Words, hiring American Dad composer Joel McNeely to create approximations of Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins, and Billy May's arrangements for Frank Sinatra's deathless, mid-century records for Capitol. These classic concept albums are clearly the blueprint for Music Is Better Than Words which was, after all, recorded at Capitol Records' legendary studio with MacFarlane singing into the very same microphone Sinatra used all those years ago, and there is a bit of a concept to this 2011 LP, too, with the cartoonist selecting songs never recorded by any member of the Rat Pack — along with a couple recent tunes like “She’s Wonderful Too,” which McNeely originally wrote for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles — for his tribute to that ring-a-ding-ding swing. MacFarlane and McNeely don’t attempt to ape the pizzazz of Frank’s Reprise years, nor do they spend much time with May’s snazzy snap, they stick with Riddle and Jenkins, keeping things sentimental and lush even when the words crackle with wit.

Seth Macfarlane, as always, fuses a rare talent for understanding what is genuinely good quality with what is extremely appealing to people. This album is a refreshing reminder of the greats of good music and 'big band' music, dean martin, frank sinatra. It is not sup rising that his music is of a genuinely high calibre. This album has some really wonderful songs. They are very uplifting, soothing, therapeutic to listen to, and some that are also very lively and great to dance to. They're great contributions to this genre of music, titles such as Anybody's Spring, Something Good and Two Sleepy people. But what's great about these songs is that they are equally great, you'll have a great deal of satisfaction listening to them.

In addition, the lyrics are really great. The songs have some great messages to say, but at the same time are lighthearted and easy to listen to. This is a very appealing.

A truly wonderful album from Seth Macfarlane. I think it is what will be the beginning of some very special music

This album is full of life and soul,I'm buying this:)

Essential to any fan of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and the rest. Seth's take on these classics can only be described as incredible. I once heard him described on TV as 'offensively multi-talented' which is very true. People often say that Michael Buble is the closest thing to Sinatra around today, I think Seth is more worthy of that title. A majestic album.

Best known as the creative force behind the animated sitcoms Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show, Seth MacFarlane is also a rabid music enthusiast, frequently using his shows for interpretations of his most beloved show tunes or cracking jokes at Celine Dion or Rick Astley's expense. In 2005 he released Family Guy: Live in Vegas, a collection of songs from the show along with some original numbers. In 2009 he sang at the BBC Proms in London during their Celebration of Classic MGM Film...
