As Mussorgsky Would Have Loved It

Like most people, I suppose, I first became familiar with 'Pictures From An Exhibition' in the form of Ravel's orchestral version of Mussorgsky's piano suite (though I have heard a very fine brass band version). Steven Osborne's performance is something of a revelation. This is a very precise rendition of the piece that Mussorgsky actually wrote. What is striking is the rich variety of tone that Osborne gets from his piano and the quality of the recording. The different versions of the 'Promenade' linking theme are distinct and clear. The real surprise on this album, though, are the Prokoviev piano suites that accompany the Mussorgsky. These are a selection of musical sketches and Osborne plays them delightfully. I thoroughly recommend this album without reservation
