iTunes Review

Young & Old is the second release by Tennis, featuring the married duo of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. Following the success of Tennis’ 2011 out-of-nowhere debut, Cape Dory, the group delivers another collection of catchy dream-pop. Tennis’ bedroom-recording vibe was definitely appealing on its debut, but the bolder production here by The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney is an improvement, adding richness and definition to the sound. Another good addition is drummer and new band member James Barone, who anchors uptempo highlights like “Origins”, “Traveling”, and “Petition”. (Moore is a charming singer and keyboardist, while Riley’s on bass and guitar.) Tennis plays a blend of ‘60s pop, girl groups, and surf rock. “Robin” and “Dreaming” capture the debut’s carefree feel, while lush and spacious tunes like “My Better Self” and “High Road” reveal a different side. The combination makes for a terrific second release.
