Album Review

Seven Mary Three isn't much more than a standard bar band, but the group tears through American Standard with enough energy to convince listeners it's something more. Beneath that energy and their crushing, grungy riffs, the bandmembers display some promising songwriting skills, highlighted by the single "Cumbersome."

A forgotten masterpiece

Seven Mary Three were criminally under-rated during the 90's grunge revolution, and in the proceeding years have continued to live in the shadow of grunge legends (and obvious influences) Pearl Jam, among others. That shouldn't put you off buying this album though, as it is simply brilliant from start to finish. Heavily relying on arpeggiated chords and the warm, raspy vocals of frontman Jason Ross, the band consistently showcase melodic, emotive and deeply personal songs. This album remains the band's biggest selling opus, and it's easy to see why. It may not have had the cultural impact of Nirvana's "Nevermind" or Pearl Jam's "Ten", but in it's own way American Standard can hold it's own against either of those releases. A majestic album.

Back to the start!

7M3 have changed in musical direction since this album but nothing should be taken away from the sheer greatness of their work. Looking for a new old band to discover? Start here and you won't go far wrong.

Instead, Seven Mary Three offer songs concerning self-discovery and true outsiders isolated from society. Based in Virginia (where the bandmates attended the College of William and Mary), Seven Mary Three signed to the Mammoth label after releasing...
