A disappointment, but still hoping...

I think the problem has a name: David Khane! While it worked for Paul McCartney (although judging from the production on Rob Me Blind, Khane probably acted more like an engineer to McCartney than a real producer!), it doesn't work for Jay Brannan. This album is soulless and it pains me to say so because all the compositions are things of beauty, spoilt by run-of-the-mill, bland arrangements. It's too clean and safe, cold even.
Don't get me wrong, it could be worse... And given the state of the music these days it still swims above the surface but it's not good enough. All the songs are beautifully sung (and the voice is crystal clear which is the saving grace of the album) but they are greater in their stripped versions of guitar and voice.
It's a shame everything relies too much on technology and the album reeks of computerised orchestral arrangements and lightweight clicking drums (or drum machines?), so CLINICAL!. The worst offenders are what I held as Jay's best songs so far, the title track Rob Me Blind and my favourite of his, Denmark. To start off with, Jay changed the phrasing of the melody and then there are some awful piano patterns and drums that totally mar the song. So so disappointing!
I wish he made an unplugged version of the whole album. As it stands it is just worthy of 3 stars and I'm generous.. Hopefully Jay Brannan will continue performing live on his own and give those songs the treatment they deserve!

Great music !!

I love your music you have a great voice! :) x

Fantastic

Great new album from a genuinely nice guy and talented artist.

Biography

Born: 29 March 1982 in Texas

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Texas-born singer, songwriter, and actor Jay Brannan's angelic voice and folky acoustic approach may make him appear like a garden-variety contemporary singer/songwriter, but his musical sensibility brings him closer to hard-to-fit-in-a-box female artists like Ani DeFranco, Lisa Loeb, Sinéad O'Connor, and Liz Phair, and he sounds like nothing so much as a male version of Joni Mitchell at times. Brannan appeared as Seth in John Cameron Mitchell's 2006 film Shortbus, and his song "Soda Shop" was featured...
