iTunes Review

Commissioned to create a “21st-century song cycle inspired by select classical pieces spanning the last 400 years,” Tori Amos, true to her muse, turns it into a classically influenced Tori Amos album. She works variations on Bach, Debussy, Mendelssohn, Satie, Schubert, Schumann and others. At her beloved Bosendorfer piano with orchestration arranged by John Philip Shenale, Amos creates a concept album that’s difficult to explain quickly. The dramatic piano flourishes from “Battle of Trees” create a genuine tension over its eight minutes. “Fearlessness,” based on Enrique Granados’ 12 Spanish Dancers, is a melodic feast. “Edge of the Moon” is a solemn poem. Her 11-year-old daughter is in strong voice and together they make tracks such as “Cactus Practice”, “Job’s Coffin” and “The Chase” special moments for mother and child. It’s a one- of-a-kind piece that should please hardcore Amos fans who have no less interest in whether or not there are any radio hits. The Deluxe Edition includes videos for “Carry” and “Nautical Twilight” that visually evoke the music’s heart and display Amos at work.

impressive, but somewhat self-indulgent

Like the previous reviewer, I am and have been a big fan of Tori's work for the last 20 years. This is a major challenge to listen to. It's not my preferred genre and I pre-ordered without even previewing. I am going to persevere, but I can't help feeling that this production was more for Tori's benefit than for that of her fans.

I'll post another as it grows on me...

Different - but a grower

Have been a fan of Tori's like the previous reviewer's for many years. I wasn't sure about this LP but thought I'd listen briefly to each track, as you do.

In honesty - it isn't a easy listen but the album does grow on you - especially track The Chase - really interesting listening to the duet and the lyrics used.

a back to basics

a strange album this.... but while the tracklist is on the more album appreciation friendly length rather than the how many songs are on this album that plagued ADP and AATS.... it still suffers from the weak production since beekeeper... i am a Tori appreciate... but the production since beekeeper has done nothing for her vocals or songs as a whole. ADP was a comeback album but it was plagued by too many tracks on one album. AATS was just sonically abandoned. Both production faults. Night of Hunters shines in certain places. Shattering Sea, Your Ghost, Edge of The Moon and Carry are great Tori tracks. Some songs have the addition of guest vocalist Natashya...her daugher... but while her daughter has a great Amy/Duffy break smokey detracts from Tori`s emotion and perhaps undermines her vocal abilities. My advice to Tori Amos would be to work with a commercial modern producer. You have the songwriting capabilities but the production downgrades your vocal and sonic levels.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) was one of several female singer/songwriters who combined the stark, lyrical attack of alternative rock with a distinctly '70s musical approach, creating music that fell between the orchestrated meditations of Kate Bush and the stripped-down poetics of Joni Mitchell. In addition, she revived the singer/songwriter traditions of the '70s while re-establishing the piano as a rock & roll instrument. With her 1992 album Little Earthquakes, Amos built a dedicated following...
