Album Review

The task of compiling a single-disc best-of collection for legendary Greek chanteuse Nana Mouskouri is virtually impossible, but this 21-track retrospective, spanning the singer's career and incorporating a range of musical styles, is an excellent introduction for the novice or casual fan. For the collector, it offers two rarities: her version of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" (in English) and her duet with Michel Legrand, "Quand on S'Aime." From the song that made her famous ("The White Rose of Athens") to French opera (Carmen's Habanera), the array of musical styles (and languages) this woman has conquered is staggering. This disc, which includes pop songs ("Bridge Over Troubled Water"), gospel ("Oh Happy Day"), and classics (Ave Maria), brings the songs together seamlessly — it's difficult to imagine that these recordings span nearly 40 years. Despite a serious lack of liner notes, this single-disc compilation is a definite treat, and a wonderful introduction to one of the most famous singers the world has known. ~ Jose F. Promis, Rovi

Customer Reviews

I was 14 when I first listening to Nana Mouskouri. I remember being 15 and seeing her live in Belfast and in Dublin for her farewell tour. It was very sad, she's just an all-round amazing woman from what I've seen, read and heard. I have a 50-strong CD collection including her 30-something box-set 'Collection'. This compilation is one of the best put together, so stunning. For a smile, listen to 'Over and Over', for a tear-jerker 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes'. A perfectly even album, worth a million times more than the pennies it costs. I hope she does a few one-off concerts in the future, she's so missed!

Nana Mouskouri is a much underated singer

A very moving recording . This disc has someting for everyone . The "Song for Liberty " is especially good .

The Humming Song

The Humming Song----Yes, I know it's dated, old fashioned and tedious.... but wait... if you are learning to sing [ I mean learning properly and not pinning your hopes and dreams looking for your 5 minutes of fame ] then this number is excellent to practice breathing and timing techniques. You might even come to realise that Nana has a magical voice with pronunciation, vowel and consonant second to none... as for her subtle sounding range.....WOW

Globally speaking, Nana Mouskouri is the biggest-selling female artist of all time. Her fluency in multiple languages -- Greek, French, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese -- enabled her to reach audiences all over Europe, the Americas, and even Asia. Possessed of a distinctive, angelic soprano -- the product of having been born with only one vocal cord -- Mouskouri was sometimes described as Europe's answer to Barbra Streisand. Her repertoire was varied enough to support the universal appeal she...
