iTunes Editors' Notes

If the Jesus and Mary Chain were able to parlay the media hype surrounding their early singles into a decade and a half long career as dorm room darlings it is largely because of the mind boggling sonic innovations of their debut album, Psychocandy, and the cult of adoring noise-pop merchants that sprung up in its wake. Certainly the melancholic textures of later Jesus and Mary Chain offerings like Darklands and Honey’s Dead hold a respectable place in the band’s body of work, but it's the feedback strewn pop narcosis of “Just Like Honey” and the distanced cool of “Never Understand” that launched hundreds of imitators, and inspired future greats like J. Mascis and Kevin Shields to take the innovations of Psychocandy a few steps further. Even though Psychocandy made noise-damaged pop excessively fashionable, none of its imitators have yet equaled it. Listening to the record today one does not hear the hyper-confrontational group once trumpeted in the UK press as the new avatars of noise-rock. Instead one hears a self-assured group of dedicated amateurs carefully juxtaposing dissonance against harmony and finding musical transcendence in the process.

Customer Reviews

pyscho rip-off more like.....

Make no mistake. This is an excellent album. Therefore I am even more gutted that the quality of sound on this purchase was so bad we could hardly make out the vocals. I've bought over £300 worth of music on itunes and this is the first time this has happened. So.....report a problem? Itunes response......, "please refer to our NO refund policy. We consider this matter closed". Very very poor show and possibly infringment of statutory rights. Psycho 'sour' candy eh?

You need to understand me

Quite simply one of the best ever albums...ever!! How this affected me has never changed in 21 years. If you listen and still cannot hear the harmony you have no soul. I personally believe no album has ever matched this..before or after 1985, but that's me. Just like Honey, The Hardest Walk and Some Candy Talking...the greatest love songs ever? Who cares..I was in love in 85 and still am. My personal choice as Best album ever...and I own some classics too!!

Awesome

This has to be still one of the finest ever debut albums as it screeched and wailed its way through your pysche creating a state of mind normally associated with narcotic induced haze. Never Understand is a classic track bristling with life and raw power which directly opposes the acoustic brilliance of Taste of Cindy. A truly wonderful album.

Biography

Formed: 1984 in Glasgow, Scotland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Like the Velvet Underground, their most obvious influence, the chart success of the Jesus and Mary Chain was virtually nonexistent, but their artistic impact was incalculable; quite simply, the Scottish group made the world safe for white noise, orchestrating a sound dense in squalling feedback which served as an inspiration to everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Dinosaur Jr. Though the supporting players drifted in and out of focus, the heart of the Mary Chain remained vocalists and guitarists...
