Punchy Anthemic Rock

'Next Best Superstar' is a guitar driven track and Melanie's rockier vocal tone finds a great home here. Melanie C is back with her first single from her first album on her own independant label and can she cut it alone away from a major? Ignoring the fact that Melanie put together three fantastic physical formats for this comeback single (inc. a 7" vinyl)... the song itself lends itself to brilliant dance remixes on some releases... but it is the vocal Melanie uses to introduce herself back that marks this song as one of her best singles. Reminscent of the sing-along style of her effort with Bryan Adams (When You're Gone), Melanie delivers an infectious chorus which pokes fun at reality TV shows like X Factor. You can imagine singing the chorus into a mirror wanting to be the 'next best superstar' yourself but it also makes a bit of a joke of the whole reality of what being a 'superstar' is. The verses deliver rather a rather cutting vocal but with pronounciations which makes the song interesting 'soul', 'dream'. And then the structure of the song avoids becoming repetitive with a fantastic middle eight which shows a harmonising Melanie and the guitars together. But then what really makes this song avoid missing the edge and fallin flat are brilliant ad-libs at the end. Again reminiscent of Melanie's vocals on the hit 'When You're Gone'. Give them a listen - be impressed... and realise that you shouldn't have a go anywhere but awfully at the karaoke and realise that Melanie C is back. A song that has a point, style, and is radio friendly stuff! The mixes are great too. Welcome back Melanie C!
