Album Review

Commemorating 20 years of career with a softer emission, Elba Ramalho released this double album (sold at the price of a single), in which one of the discs was recorded live in this same show in Salvador, BA, and in her 1999 appearance at the Montreux Festival. The concept here is to unify the different fan bases: including successes of the beginning of her career and songs of Northeastern composers of her generation ("A Palo Seco," Belchior; "O Meu Amor" and "Não Sonho Mais," Chico Buarque; "Ave de Prata," Zé Ramalho; "Cajuína," Caetano Veloso; "Nó Cego," Pedro Osmar; "Kukukaya," Cátia de França), romantic songs (the bossa "Palavra de Mulher," Chico Buarque; "Imaculada," Ary Sperling/Aldir Blanc), and forrós (mostly gathered in the upbeat live disc, like the fundamental songs "Pisa na Fulô" by João do Vale; "Pé de Serra" and "Olha pro Céu" by Luiz Gonzaga; "De Volta pro Aconchego," Dominguinhos; "No Som da Sanfona," Jackson do Pandeiro). She commemorates the experience acquired in decades on the road, which is translated by a softer emission, less aggressive and metallic, which was her trademark in the early years. The album also has guest stars: Alceu Valença, Chico Buarque, Zé Ramalho, Lenine, Nana Caymmi, Geraldo Azevedo, Margareth Menezes, Gerônimo, and Dominguinhos.

Born in 1941, Elba Ramalho is a dizzying force of nature and one of the most successful and popular vocalists to emerge from Brazil's northeast. A veritable Renaissance woman: world class handball player,...
