Superb thinking man's (and woman's) music...

For those who haven't heard Family before, you're in for a real treat. Progressive rock at it's best, Family's best albums ("Family Entertainment" and "Music from a Doll's House") are easily the equal of more famous albums such as Tull's Aqualung or ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. If you've got those Family albums on CD, have a listen to the remixed versions on this album: "Observations from a Hill" has Roger Chapman on lead vocals and is much superior to the version on Entertainment. Brilliant.

Old Songs New Songs

Released in March 1971, this is a re-jigged semi-compilation album. Slightly different vocals and musical arrangements. A real tour de force and on it's own, Family at it's stongest. This set contains the wonderful "Weaver's Answer", "The Cat And The Rat" and "Drowned In Wine". Anyone looking for the finest of the late sixies and early seventies, look no further than this Album.

A Band Full of Ideas

Family were a brilliant live band, one of the very best of their time, who also produced great, inventive LPs full of brave ideas. They were always looking to stretch the boundaries and were not restricted by the fashions of the times and so these songs stand up pretty well considering it is now 40 years since they were written and first performed. Because they were such a brilliant live band they tried various ways to recreate this quality on vinyl but that never quite worked for me. It was a search many bands tried at the time and none really succeeded - maybe because of the limits of the technology but more likely because the search to record the essence of live performance is futile, even if you were there at the time. great band though.
