Album Review

Produced by long-term collaborator Hal Willner, Marianne Faithfull's 19th studio album, Horses and High Heels, sees the '60s icon revisit eight classic songs from her heyday on her second consecutive covers-heavy album, following 2009's Easy Come Easy Go. Its 13 tracks include reworkings of the Shangri-Las' "Past, Present and Future," Lesley Duncan's "Love Song," and Dusty Springfield's "Goin' Back," alongside several new compositions ("Why Did We Have to Part," "The Old House") and guest appearances from Lou Reed, Dr. John and MC5's Wayne Kramer. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi

One her best in my opinion but doesn't top Vagabond Ways. I love Marianne's voice, long may she continue. Stand out tracks include Why Did We Have To Part, Eternity and Prussian Blue.

More great songs from Marianne & Hal Wilner

24 years since Strange Weather and Marianne & Hal keep finding great songs to cover. I'm sure her world tour will be a riproaring success as usual, the band behind her are a fantastic group of musos because she always hires the best. Nice to see her writing some songs again too. I like Going Back, completely different from Dusty's version of course, but just as heart warming. Can't wait to see her in London in May, no-one surpasses her stage presence, and looking forward to hearing the new songs and a few old ones too. Well done Marianne & Hal Wilner.

Would like to know how big Marianne's fan base is, can't be that big, I heard some of her other albums and to be honest why does she still bother, she totally crucifies Love Song on this album, the best cover I've heard of Love Song is Elton John's on the Tumbleweed Connection album, I suppose the next thing on her agenda is to do a duet with Yoko Ono.

Few stars of the '60s reinvented themselves as successfully as Marianne Faithfull. Coaxed into a singing career by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham in 1964, she had a big hit in both Britain and the U.S. with her debut single, the Jagger/Richards composition "As Tears Go By" (which prefaced the Stones' own version by a full year). Considerably more successful in her native land than the States, she had a series of hits in the mid-'60s that set her high, fragile voice against delicate orchestral...
