Editors’ Notes

As a songwriter, John Mayer gets the details right — his snapshots of young singles falling in and out of love in the big city are sharp-eyed and tempered with humor. Room For Squares made him a star at the dawn of the 21st Century, and deservedly so. He's a deft musical miniaturist, capturing the pleasures and sorrows of everyday life in jazz-tinged, hook-laden sonic settings. On this album, many of his observations have a bittersweet cast, whether he’s recalling childhood (“83”), lamenting foolish words (“My Stupid Mouth”) or examining the twentysomething blues (“Why Georgia”). Offsetting such melancholy are warmly sensual numbers like “Your Body Is A Wonderland” and “City Love,” as winning a pair of modern-day romantic tunes as you could ask for. An understated but still-insistent rhythmic pulse runs through these tracks, at once funky and folksy. Both universal in its themes and as personal as a box of love letters, Room For Squares confirmed Mayer as an artist of rising appeal.

Customer Reviews

Pure genius

I am not a 'middle of the road' fan and on first inspection JM is a little 'soft'. But the more you listen the more you hear. Musicality, ryhthm, and just plain cool music is what you get. I am recommending his music to all my friends - if you have an ear for great music and an eye for talent just listen, watch (and learn!). Hope he's coming to the UK soon.

John Mayer "Room for Squares"

His best album. Excellent, emotional, romantic lyrics, well produced, sounds great with valves! Easy listening yet Great Indoors is my favourite. Might be commercial but I'd recommend.

Very mainstream but nontheless divine.

After making his introduction as a sensitive, acoustic-styled songwriter on 2001's Room for Squares, John Mayer steadily widened his approach over the subsequent years, encompassing everything from blues-rock to adult contemporary in the process. Arriving during the tail end of teen pop's heyday, he crafted pop music for a more discerning audience, spiking his songcraft with jazz chords and literate turns of phrase. The combination proved to be quite popular, as Room for Squares went triple platinum...
