All Hail The New Prog

If you’re a fan of The Libertines, The Rakes or Razorlight, look away now ; it’s going to get ugly. Everyone Into Position is a toweringly-ambitious, impossibly epic record ; literally ocean-sized. Typically, layers of guitars, multi-tracked vocals and washes of sound are underpinned by tricky time signatures and masterful musicianship. Pete Doherty? Pah. So far, so prog-rock then. But unlike that much-maligned movement, never once does this descend into the self-indulgent, 27-minute Moog wig out that typified the genre and provided its critics with ammunition. Rather, these tracks are pretty accessible. Tracks Ornament/Last Wrongs and Meredith are the sound of a band hitting their stride with new expansive, panoramic songs. Indeed much of this album would look great accompanied by some choice NASA imagery The highlight is Music For A Nurse, which starts off with delicate delay pedal chords before ramping up into a full-blown epic, sounding like Sigur Ros covering The Verve. Or is it the other way round? If I had one criticism, it’s that there are some chunks of nu-metal on display here and, without wanting to sound like my Dad, someone should have really turned the amp down from 11 to 10. This is really the reason why I haven’t given the album 5 stars. Doubtless there are those who will think that Everyone Into Position is in danger of collapsing under the weight of its own pretension, but they would be wrong. In fact it’s refreshing to see as band eschewing the stripped down sound of early 21st Century rock, and instead heading in the opposite direction: out into space Don’t scoff, just buy it

Utterly stunning album. Truely fantastic. And just when you think it couldn't get any better 'Ornament/The Last Wrongs' hits you like a ton of bricks and squeezes out every drop of emotion in your soul.

Why does music move us? Cos of albums like this. Mogwai, early Verve, Explosions in the Sky, Biffy Clyro... if you like these bands... this album will always move you... I can't let it go.

Oceansize were one of numerous British bands crafting epic, moody soundscapes in the post-Radiohead era. However, they couldn't be pigeonholed as a Coldplay/Travis clone; their influences ran the gamut from space rock old (Pink Floyd) and new (Mogwai, the Verve) to alternative metal (Jane's Addiction, Tool), shoegaze (My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver), and even the avant-garde (Can, Tortoise). Formed in Manchester, England, the band featured vocalist/guitarist Mike Vennart, guitarists Gambler and...
