Economy of effort...
The name of the game with this album is economy and efficiency. It's like Dominic Miller assembled great session musicians only to tease us with glimpses of what they individually and collectively can achieve. To hear Mark King limited to single notes and working within the constraints of a few chords is like seeing a Ferrari stuck in traffic. But that's not to suggest this is a poor album. A few listens and the economy of effort starts to manifest not as indifference or selfishness on Dominic's part, but instead as an attempt to let straightforward tunes speak for themselves. Michaelangelo painting in shades of grey...something like that, anyway. Very high quality production values show through and the dynamic range is superb. A cd that deserves time, and the best equipment on which to play it.
