Beth Rowley’s Little Dream of an Album

Having followed Beth for quite a long time now, this has been one of my most eagerly anticipated albums of the year. Having already treated us with samples such as the fantastic 'Violets' EP and the beautiful 'Oh My Life' single, the question was would she keep it all together with her debut LP 'Little Dreamer'? The album brings about a soulful sound from a very talented woman, but her huge presence and ear for a song separates her from the current trend of strong-voiced females who also bring more of a retro feel. As a result, she brings forth a real ground-breaking debut album, the type that builds the foundation for a wonderful career. The Album leads off with the soulful gospel-like song ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’, a great song with a haunting yet powerful feel that sets the album on its way. From that point, she continues the album in the same vein as she started it, bringing soulful, melodic sounds with jazz and acoustic infusions which she rides with and commands with her wonderful vocal talent. Following after the lead track is ‘Sweet Hours’, a beautiful track reminiscent of a storm the way it gradually builds up before its subtle ending. Then follows two tracks with a summer days feel, the slightly up-tempo sensuous, ‘So Sublime’ (which also possesses a devastatingly gorgeous hook, creating a literally Sublime song), and the pleasant cover ‘I Shall Be Released’. Beth slows it down again for another haunting number ‘Only One Cloud’, with a slow, drowning feeling that magically catches your attention. The country infused ‘When The Rain Comes’ see’s Beth steer in a slightly different direction, but her commanding unrelinquishing presence makes the song a nice sing-along type of song. Next is the lead single ‘Oh My Life’, a great jazzy number (which I previously wrote a review for). The, arrangements, the Bass Saxophone and the measured vocal range showcases that Beth Rowley really knows how to make a song! All of which results in a sensational song. ‘Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground’ is a remarkable duet with Duke Special. It also proves to be a touching lyrical showcase. With nothing but a Piano and backing singers, ‘Almost Persuaded’ is another song with a gospel feel. The lyrics and song arrangement go hand-in-hand for this great song. ‘You Never Called Me Tonight’ is a great soulful track, which would perfectly fit the mood of any wine bar as another reviewer has mentioned. The albums final track (excluding the lovely ‘Be My Baby’ cover bonus track) is the song ‘Beautiful Tomorrow’. The use of the acoustic guitar and the harmonica gives the song a brilliant authentic blues feel, bringing about a fine end to the album. The album is a great package, the songs fit perfectly well on this LP without any out of place tracks, yet, together with the production team, there is enough variation throughout the album for each song to stand out and be instantly recognised. Apologies for the long review, but the album is undeniably worth it. Beth Rowley is a special talent and Little Dreamer signals that. I definitely recommend this album as a must buy, for a rare talent that just can’t be ignored.

So Sublime..

Beth is the real deal, an authentic soul voice and a true English rose. Forget the other female singers that have emerged in a wave of hype this year. It's a great listen and it showcases an individual and effortless vocal performance. Nice to see Duke Special drop by on 'Angel Flying..' too.

I love you Beth!

I waited up all night to be able to download this album (how sad am I?) I had already bought some of the songs on the singles.. but on initial listen, I am loving beautiful tomorrow!! I stumbled upon Beth, and I will never look back!! Watch out for Beth!!
