iTunes Review

Brendan Benson has been an impressive pop-rock artist with and without Jack White. Benson's membership in The Raconteurs with White raised the Michigan native's profile in many circles, but Benson's never needed help putting together smart, catchy rock 'n' roll. Here he does duet with The Pistol Annies' Ashley Monroe on "Pretty Baby" and "On the Fence" to great effect, but mostly he conjures a vibe that's led many to compare him to Harry Nilsson, Todd Rundgren, Matthew Sweet, and even Jeff Lynne's ELO. It's solid pop companionship, with indelible tunes like "Met Your Match", "Thru the Ceiling" (cowritten with Jay Joyce), and "The Light of Day" (which features nicely flanged guitars) making the connection clear. "No One Else but You" starts with the wind whipping across the plains until the country-rock kicks in, as if Benson's suddenly an extra member of The Jayhawks. There are many different influences here, all brought together with ease and affection.

Another great offering from one of the best American song writers. I wouldn't rate it as his best album but a few songs are up there with his greatest. If your a fan (like me) you'll love it.

He continued working as a solo artist for the better part of a decade, releasing three albums of his own while occasionally appearing on other artists' records. However, Benson remained a minor part of the musical mainstream until 2005, when he began collaborating with...
