iTunes Review

Although Metallic Spheres is a three-track EP, it stretches out just shy of an hour. What's more impressive is that the Orb landed David Gilmour in the studio, where he actually played outside on the deck. While many modern musicians hark back to more obvious Floydian influences such as The Wall or anything involving the late, great Syd Barrett, Metallic Spheres recalls those electronic experiments recorded on Ummagumma and the orchestral parts of Atom Heart Mother. Gilmour's lap-steel revives tones last heard with his work on Unicorn's 1974 debut Blue Pine Trees. His guitar is instantly recognizable on "Metallic Side" — so much that he may need to dust off the laser light-show should he ever join the Orb in a live setting. "Sphere's Side" opens with samples of seals under ice from Werner Herzog 2007's documentary Encounters at the End of the World before the Orb's signature ambiance bubbles and blossoms with familiar beats and layered progressions of natural sounds. "The Cult of Youth Ambient Mix, Pts 1 & 2 (Edit)" mashes both movements in a CliffsNotes-esque summation.

One of the year's better albums

As a debut solo effort, I approached this with the normally-warranted level of trepidation and doubt. This time, it was not warranted - this is a terrific album, filled to the brim with catchy melodies, memorable lyrics and great musical variety.

"Flamingo" opens with Flowers' homage to his home city: "Welcome to the Fabulous Las Vegas" - a grower of a track that would sit easily on "Sam's Town" or "Day and Age" - and follows it magnificently with the beautiful second single "Only The Young", which is reminiscent of "Tidal Wave" (one of The Killers' more under-appreciated tracks). The rest of the album could have been forgiven if it had not been able to hold the momentum of these songs throughout its duration, but save for one or two slight miss-fires (for me: "Hard Enough" and "Was It Something I Said?" are the weakest tracks on the album), it manages to maintain the quality all the way through to the last track-- even the bonus tracks hold their own; the fantastic Pet-Shop-Boysesque "Jacksonville" is one of the album's highlights.

Overall, "Flamingo" is a great surprise and is far more than just a filler before the next Killer. If you're a fan of the band, have no worries that you will also be a fan of their front-man.

Genius

Stop reading this review now and buy it!
It may be the same 'killers' sound we've come to love (minus the rest of the band) but this is the album we've been waiting for since their debut. Mature, raw, epic and original - do your music collection a favour and place this there.

Killer album, well, kinda

It's a Killers album, with out most of the Killers.
Same amazing sound, and epic song after epic song.
Throughly recomend it, BUY IT!

Brandon Flowers was the most popular frontman of the new wave revival, which swept through America and England during the early 2000s. As frontman of the Killers, he helped popularize a genre that hadn’t been fashionable for nearly two decades, drawing influence from a number of '80s synth pop bands — including New Order, Echo & the Bunnymen, and the Psychedelic Furs — while writing the songs that comprised his band’s multi-platinum debut, Hot Fuss. Flowers also proved to be a super-sized...
