Best album of 2008

This is an acoustic pop album by a US trio containing Keith GOODwin, Tim ArnOLD and Dan SchWARtz. They were going to call themselves Goodwin, Arnold and Schwartz but it sounded to much like team of lawyers. Then they thought of calling themselves The Castles (but there are a lot of bands using that name) before settling on Good Old War. Their background is US alternative rock. Keith and Tim were members of Days Away and they released IMHO the best album of recent years for Fueled By Ramen called "Mapping An Invisible World". Late last year they also released a fabulous EP called "Ear Candy For The Headphone Trippers". Those Days Away records are melodic electric rock, so Good Old War is a complete departure. "Only Way To Be Alone" is a collection of beautiful campfire songs. They are exquisitely sung and simply played. I have listened to many, many new records this year and this one stands out from the rest for me. I very much admire the thoughtful and direct song-writing style of GOW and the harmonies are the finest that I have heard since Crosby, Stills and Nash. That is a long time ago, I know and it shouldn't put you off. "Only Way To Be Heard" is not Woodstock revisited by any imagination. Funnily enough, the single "Coney Island" is one of the least spectacular tracks in the collection. The most outstanding are "Weak Man" "Looking For Shelter" and "I'm Not For You". The coda of "I'm Not For You" is an instant gloriously successful moment, reminiscent of The Byrds "Lady Friend" and Orange Juice's "Poor Old Soul". I never thought that I would mention those 2 songs in the same sentence! The middle eight of "Weak Man" is guaranteed to put a big smile on your face and remind you of how much you love music. This record is a magnificent achievement and I am sure you will love it. Whether Keith can go back to Days Away after this record remains to be seen. But whatever happens next for Good Old War, this timeless album will last forever . A classic and no mistake.

Who are these guys?

This is an unusually good debut album of melodic, well-harmonised, folk-rock, pop songs. Comparisons may be rather subjective, but you'll probably like this album if you're into Scottish folk-rock bands such as The Cosmic Rough Riders, Teenage Fanclub, Aberfeldy and (especially) Attic Lights.

Great catchy acoustic pop album

Discovered this after hearing the free single of the week. I love this album, fantastic vocals and harmonies, catchy melodies - the preview snippets you get don't do this justice, you need to hear the whole album to give yourself a real feel good feeling. Trust me, if you like the 30 second previews, you will love this.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A group formed in the off time (that is to say, on hiatus) of the band Days Away, Good Old War — named with a selection of "parts" of its members' names — was launched by Days Away's Keith Goodwin and Tim Arnold. Joined by Daniel Schwartz of Unlikely Cowboy, Good Old War began recording its debut album in Los Angeles in 2008, with hopes of a release on Sargent House later in the fall. That same year, Good Old War acted as the backing band (both live and in the studio) for Anthony Greene's...
