iTunes Review

Neck of the Woods finally breaks Silversun Pickups from their '90s alt-rock comparisons. Not that they're done exploring (and improving on) that blueprint; the opening “Skin Graph” explodes into a droning indie pop gem worthy of The Breeders. A-list producer Jacknife Lee (Bloc Party, Snow Patrol, Kasabian, R.E.M.) mixes Brian Aubert’s guitars to sound suitably big and heavy. In “Make Believe,” Aubert whisper-sings before slipping into nasal-toned inflections. The standout song “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)” is immediately gripping, with a fluttering strobe of distorted tones and blissed-out dream-pop guitars, but it’s the unshakable melody that makes it special. Both “The Pit” and “Dots and Dashes (Enough Already)” work in gloomy post-punk flourishes.

Bury the Lie

This is a great follow up to swoon, I mean cmon….how do you top that. Well you don't try! You just keep on experimenting and this is what you get.
Think this is an amazing album. Instantly catchy ,amazing lyrics, love the new order aspect of the pit.
The whole album is just the right amount of dark and brooding and gorgeousness for me.
These guys (and girl) can do no wrong for me eva!

Still the SSPU I love

Took a few listens to get used to the experimental direction of this album, but all in all a great followup to Swoon. Highly polished, but still with that great fuzzy sound in the background. Finding it difficult to enjoy The Pit but the whole album grows on you as you listen to the deeper textures in the music over time. This could become my favourite album release of the year

Reaching for the Panic Switch.

A big let down following two of my favourite albums - Carnavas and Swoon. Whilst the production quality is significantly better - the song writing seems tame and unimaginative. Not sure what the 'experimental' tag applies to here - most of these songs just aren't good enough to get on either album. Bloody Mary is the stand out track, otherwise it's a pretty insipid affair. Time to get back to fuzzy guitars and fractured vocals.

Formed: 2002 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Los Angeles indie rockers whose organic but richly atmospheric sound (and their subsequent critical and commercial success) helped put the uber-hip Silver Lake scene on the map, Silversun Pickups were formed in 2002, initially using the name A Couple of Couples. The original handle reflected the fact that in the band's first lineup, lead guitarist Brian Aubert was romantically involved with drummer Elvira Gonzales, while rhythm guitarist Jack Kennedy was in a relationship with bassist Nikki Monninger....
