Album Review

The recording credits for this album practically read like the location credits for a James Bond film, as we have tracks cut in various parts of Morocco plus Spain and Germany. This group consisted of German musicians interacting with Moroccans, an expected turn of events considering the large Arab population in Germany. The heavy disco and house scene of the late '80s was the contribution from the German side, which might be enough to totally sandbag the production for purists. Many may find it an extremely pleasant listening experience, with high quality singing and fine use of the string section from the National Orchestra of Morocco. The sectional aspect of much Arab music, with a slow section followed by the tempo picking up, adds a lot of variety.

Although the trio Dissidenten specializes in the exotic sounds of Africa, all three of their members -- Uve Müllrich, Marlon Klein, and Friedo Josch -- hail from Berlin, Germany. Originally formed in 1981, the trio issued a few self-financed singles, before touring Asia for the better part of a year. By 1982, the group had relocated to India, where they lived in the palace of Maharaja Bhalkrishna Bharti of Gondagaon in Madja Pradesh in central India.
