Album Review

In some ways, Heather Nova is more talented than many of her female singer/songwriter contemporaries. She has an appealing voice, strong lyrics, and memorable melodies — that is, when she delivers. Unfortunately, many of her albums are uneven, with Nova delivering the goods as often as she misses the mark. The best moments on her second album, Oyster, rank among her very best work, demonstrating that she can pull off ballads, guitar pop, and hard rock with equal aplomb. The rest of the album isn't so much bad as it is bland, offering lesser versions of the good stuff. Certainly, Nova makes Oyster worth exploring — it's just a little frustrating that the entire album doesn't deliver on the promise of its best moments.

Customer Reviews

After pestering iTunes for a couple of years to put this on, they finally have, though I doubt I had any influence. This is a fantastic album, and was a favourite of mine until I lent it to someone who never gave it back. Haunting and thought-provoking, it's well worth a listen for anyone who likes Tori Amos or other female singer-songwriters who tell a story through emotion and use of allegory.

Hauntingly Beautiful

I was mesmerized by this album on my first listen. Her ability to play such delicate emotional songs such as walking higher and heal, then to abruptly charge up to powerful rock songs is a very unique talent and she delivers constantly. Light years for me is the standout its so powerful it constantly has a feeling of longing and her vocals for me personally shimmer here reaching the heights at the dramatic ending. Wonderful album a must have for fans of true artists and fans of fresh styled music.

So glad this is finally available on here, it's been far too long. Amazing album. Doubled Up is beautiful. Buy this!
