Steps in the right direction.

A year on from the Mercury nomination and already Portico Quartet are miles away from the simple and eloquent melodies that made Knee Deep in the North Sea such a charming album. This time employing the production services of John Leckie (Stone Roses, Doves, Radiohead) the focus is in creating much darker soundscapes. Largely gone are the extended sax solos in favour of greater versatility and effects. This new approach is best encapsulated in the swirling maelstrom of 'The Visitor' and 'Clipper'. Whilst the minimalism is still present in tracks such as 'Line' it is marked by a more thoughful and mature attitude that pervades the writing throughout. This is music making of the highest originality and intelligence.

This is far more than just a jazz album, with influences from across the board, minimalism ala Reich and Glass, to gamalan and eastern european folk.

If you are looking for something different, interesting but still accessible, this could be it!

Where the quartet's influences clearly reference modern...
