Album Review

This fifth international studio album from the Kiwi songbird is the follow-up to 2009's Winter Magic and is a collaboration with legendary composer Ennio Morricone. Produced, arranged, conducted, and co-written by the maestro, it sees Westenra lending her dulcet tones to some of the most famous songs from Morricone's 50-year film-scoring career as well as tracks especially written for the album, and providing her own lyrics to fit timeless instrumental pieces like "Gabriel's Oboe" from the film The Mission. ~ John D. Paradiso

What a sublime voice! What a fantastic album! This lived up to all expectations and I haven't stopped playing it since I purchased it. Every track is simply brilliant - even those sung in a language I have not mastered. Musical scoring by Eric Morricone adds much to this quality album.

Too Theatrical!

All due respect to Hayley Westenra and Ennio Morricone, both supremely gifted, but unfortunatly Hayley makes all of the tracks on this album sound like a camp musical theatre production of Oliver! Tracks such as Once Upon A Time's Deborahs Theme are sorely lacking the enchanting haunting quality that made them so famous in the first place. Her vocal just doesn't have the melancholic overtones to make this project engaging ... instead we get a palatable syrupy interpretation that would have made this album a fine Mother's Day gift! NOT what Morricone's music is supposed to be all about, its far more complex and wonderous than what is presented here.
