Album Review

As the name implies, Kid British are an eminently youthful and quintessentially English band whose energetic, laddish music mines electro-clash, hip-hop, punk, and 2-Tone ska. The first half of the Mancunians' 2009 debut (they released the record in halves) contains the hit U.K. single "Our House Is Dadless," a spirited grime number in praise of single moms that makes cheeky good use of Madness' "Our House," contrasting the happy original lyrics with a rather more dour view of growing up with no male role models. Also present is "Elizabeth," a catchy ska-pop track with an infectious descending bass hook and surprisingly lovely vocal harmonies on an otherwise clamorous singalong tune, and the sweeping piano-rocker "Reactions," that sounds like a lost Wings album track. Intricate arrangements and pristine production support the clever songwriting.

Customer Reviews

Its gonna kick off bigstyle with these boys!

Brilliant live vibe for starters, saw them at City of Manchester Stadium recently with Doves, and when people start hearing tunes like Lost in London (not on here for some reason - are they holding it back for the second half or summat?) and Reactions and Cosmopolitan on here its gonna fly. They got something different and fresh, and man can you not get their tunes out of your head!

Great Album

Unique sound, catchy, reminds me of the specials

That review is ridiculous you obviously dislike them but instead of writing something meaningful like why you dislike them you instead pick what genre it's been labeled.

Anyway, I like them and I think they'll be good.

Inspired by indie rock, ska, and hip-hop, Mancunian four-piece Kid British have an eclectic sound that, combined with their witty social commentary, has been described as Blur meets OutKast. Formed in 2008, childhood friends Adio Marchant, James Mayer, and Simeon McLean, regulars on the Manchester garage scene, teamed up with jobbing producer Sean Mbaya under the guise of Kid British and the Action Manky. After shortening their name, they signed a deal with Mercury Records in 2008, and performed...
