Album Review

Not since Toad the Wet Sprocket has a band had so much pop potential with such a horrid name. But, if you can get past Gay Dad's ridiculous moniker, an album of intelligent, guilt-free pop pleasure awaits you with Leisure Noise. The hooks of the first single, "To Earth With Love," are just the tip of the iceberg. Taking a familiar formula (the swaggar of 70s glam rock combined with space-age guitars) the group is remiscent of fellow brit rock bands like Ride and Swervedriver, but instead of burying the melodies and lyrics behind a thick wall of sound, Gay Dad's vocal hooks are unabashedly pushed to the fore. With a former Mojo contributer in their ranks, it's obvious the group knows their rock history. The brilliant "Oh Jim" is a textbook power ballad and "Dimstar" and "My Son Mystic, " both songs containing soaring, shimmering guitars, are a lesson for aspiring songwriter's wanting to explore dynamics and tension.

whatever happened to......

Wow! i had forget all about Gay Dad ! Thank you iTunes. 4 excellent indie pop singles. JOY! Oh Jim, Dimstar and the exceptional To Earth with love.If i remember rightly, the rest of the album is pretty fab too. If you missed it First time around download it now!

Joy! is something that immediately springs to mind, listening to this album after seven years and it's as fresh as ever. Where did they go? One minute they're at Glastonbury and the next...? Oh Jim, what a wonderful tutorial in pop elegy. To Earth with love picks up the tempo without for one minute exhausting their soaring melodies. When they finally meet terra firma with Jesus Christ, well then for heaven's sake we're in a slow pop idyll. Hurrah for this wonderful thing, boo because I wish they'd try that difficult second album just for fun...

Definitive Britpop

I first heard this band by chance, picking up Leisure Noise for 99p in a bargain bin but was actually pleasantly surprised. The album is crisply produced, cheery, manufactured britpop, so expect nothing less, but each track is unique in its own way. It's very easy to listen to and because of the variety is one of my favourite albums. If you like your indie and your pop you should like this as it's definitive britpop without becoming too commercial

Brit-pop phenoms Gay Dad were led by singer Cliff Jones, a onetime music journalist who first began conceiving the band during the early 1990s. Initial details are sketchy and the nascent group's line-up was fluid, although drummer Nicholas "Baz" Crowe was a mainstay from the outset; a 1994 demo recorded with legendary Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham proved so disastrous it derailed Gay Dad's momentum for over a year, however, and they did not make their live debut until 1995.
