Album Review

The title By Request was chosen from many entries submitted through a Boyzone fan contest. The songs themselves were chosen from Boyzone's three albums with several new ones added for good measure. By Request reminds one of how quickly the group shot to the top and how many hits they achieved in only four years. Every song here will ring a bell with pop listeners from Europe and Asia, though Americans will only recognize one or two if they are lucky. For much of the world, the album nearly plays as a Top 40 soundtrack to the latter half of the '90s. With each album it is clear that the quality in voice, production, and choice of song has increased. Beginning with "Key to My Life" from the first album to the group's anthem "Different Beat" to the exceptional Andrew Lloyd Webber song "No Matter What," the group has remained focused on good old-fashioned "music." They have stripped down to the essentials, using sincere lyrics, simple melodies and no heavy synthetic distractions. Their decision to sound more like a band and less like a pop fabrication is admirable and probably the reason why their fellow Dublin band U2 used them on backup for the song and video "Sweetest Thing" (which does not appear on this album).

memories come flooding back

wow! i was such a huge boyzone fan, i thought they were a great band. they really stood out in the 90's as they were really sophisticated and tasteful for a boyband . each song reminds me of a time and place. i remember father and son being released and it was the first bz song i bought and going down to the record shop since then whenever a single/album was released and buying it. These guys were great together, i love 'isnt it a wonder', 'all that i need', 'baby can i hold you', 'coming home now' and 'you needed me'... shows such progression through the years. If it wasnt for them, other pop acts would never of made it through such as westlife. they were the original westlife and in most ways alot better than them too.

No Matter What, kept me together at a very special time in my life. Every time I hear it I think Stephen is singing to me.

Great album. Reminds me of growing up. Shame there will be no more with the sad sudden death of Stephen gatley. RIP x

Boyzone was Europe's most successful boy bands during the second half of the 1990s. Comprised of five Irish vocalists and funded by music manager Louis Walsh, the group embraced a similar style of pop music as Take That, whose breakup in 1996 created a void that Boyzone happily filled. By combining boyish charm with slick songwriting (much of which was co-written by the bandmates themselves), the singers found enormous success throughout the U.K., where 16 of their first 17 singles became Top Five...
