Give it time…

On first listen, this is a more conventionally 'metal' album than Cephalic Carnage's earlier offerings. Give it time, though, and it reveals itself to be just as experimental and eclectic as ever. It's a more concentrated, focused death/grindcore sound, admittedly, but the offbeat counting, jazz inflections and stoner overtones are still present and correct. I've never had the pleasure of seeing the band live, but I'd imagine this is closer to the gig experience than previous records, which relied more heavily on studio trickery and sound effects. They're still one of the most intelligent and inventive metal bands around, but the huge bouncing riffage of 'Piecemaker' and the Maiden-a-like anthemizing of 'Dying Will Be the Death of Me' prove that they can just all-out entertain too. Don't miss ANY of their releases.

This crazy concoction of truly experimental grindcore, death metal, and jazz came together in Denver, CO, in 1992. Founding members Lenzig (vocals) and Zak (guitar) put together a demo entitled Scrape My Lungs in 1993 and then took a break until 1996 when they recruited John (drums), Steve (guitar), and Doug (bass).
