Album Review

The most popular of all the Gary Numan albums is undeniably 1979's The Pleasure Principle. The reasons are simple — there is not a single weak moment on the disc, it contains his sole U.S. (number one worldwide) hit, "Cars," and new drummer Cedric Sharpley adds a whole new dimension with his powerful percussion work. The Pleasure Principle is also one of the first Gary Numan albums to feature true ensemble playing, especially heard within the airtight, killer groove of "Metal" (one of Numan's all-time best tracks). Starting things off with the atmospheric instrumental "Airlane," the quality of the songs gets stronger and stronger as the album progresses — "Films," "M.E.," "Observer," "Conversation," the aforementioned "Cars," and the U.K. Top Ten hit "Complex" all show Numan in top form. If you had to own just one Gary Numan album, The Pleasure Principle would be it.

numans finest hour

this was the first numan album i purchased back in 79.(sister had already bougth replicas)what struck me first was the cover...a man in a suit, make up,pyramid?when i got home couldnt wait to play the openenig track airline to engineers every song had that future sound..numans albums have always been so different in my opinion, hes always tried to do something new and thats why after 30 years he still sells shed loads of albums and is probably one of the best performers ive seen to date....if youve never bought a numan album or a recent fan of his new material go fo this wont be dissapointed..

The Pleasure Princle

I’ve got to confess, I’ve just bought this album, today: and I’m impressed, I really am!

I’d grown up on Numan’s single releases, and loved everyone of them, but it’s only now that’ve had the chance to say how much I’m enjoying his second album!

Go buy it, folks!

The future

Gary Numan went through a huge crisis in self belief & confidence (late 80s) the music press tore him to shreds all too cheap he even said to my parents "He thought he was a right Charlie)not quite the terms.... He was at this stage concentrating on flying as my Father being x RAF would bump into Gary on a regular basis . Typical for our tiny provincial island to turn one the greatest innovators to such low esteem and a genius to such a low ebb. He set us free, forty years ahead/times. I hear Philip k Dick nodding in agreement ... The last bastion we have of our culture left is music . Zero tolerance seems the order of the day think all look different & you've had it This youth culture punk new wave ... I hate pigeon holes.., the ability to set you self free... Thank Mr Numan... Never doubt your self again you are a future human being... As not a lots evolving around us.

One of the founding fathers of synth pop, Gary Numan's influence extends far beyond his lone American hit, "Cars," which still stands as one of the defining new wave singles. That seminal track helped usher in the synth pop era on both sides of the Atlantic, especially his native U.K., where he was a genuine pop star and consistent hitmaker during the early '80s. Even after new wave had petered out, Numan's impact continued to make itself felt; his dark, paranoid vision, theatrically icy alien persona,...
