Album Review

The companion piece to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater tribute A Musical Retrospective on 40 Years of Dance, Revelations focuses on the spirituals, song sermons and holy blues that inspired Ailey to compose modern dances like his signature work, Revelations. The stories of struggle and triumph within the music reflect the strong emotional component of Ailey's work, and fans of gospel and dance alike will find that Revelations has much to offer.

The original and the best

I love the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre and Revelations remains the most moving dance suite choreographed by the great man himself. The traditional African American gospel songs and spirituals are beautifully sung and I'm glad to have this audio recording to remind me of the dance troupe between their trips across the Atlantic.

Really soul lifting

I watched the Revelations performance and the music absolutely brought the dance to life.

This truly is stunning. Three tracks (the lively ones!) absolutely blew me away… Sinner Man, You Can Run On and, best of all, Wade In The Water. I'd not heard of Ailey or his dance antics before now but I knew different versions of these tracks (Nina Simone, Johnny Cash and Marlena Shaw et al respectively). The versions here are so finely arranged and performed… for sheer, blistering musical manna, this is hard to beat. Spiritual and barnstorming.
