iTunes Review

Gergiev brought out of the London Symphony Orchestra a range of new colours when they played Prokofiev’s music, and this recording of the complete Romeo & Juliet ballet is a superb reminder of the Gergiev-LSO partnership. Full of glorious melodies; rich, vivid colours; and a really astounding rhythmic life, this is one of Prokofiev’s finest theatrical scores. And Gergiev is a true man of the theatre, often conducting for dancers—experience that gives his performance of the ballet real authority.

Great Prokofiev

What a storming Romeo and Juliet. So much music to enjoy and a truly great performance from the LSO.

A treasure

I love this recording! This well-known and popular ballet sounds fresh and exciting, which is a real achievement and a true testament to Gergiev’s masterful conducting abilities. The wonderfully energetic, bombastic sections are matched by delicate passages of lyrical beauty. It really is packed from start to finish with the best orchestral playing money can buy. Everything about this production is world class, from the sound quality through careful engineering, the ever impressive LSO and conductor Gergiev, to the beautifully striking album artwork and informative programme notes. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but in this case you can! It’s a real treasure, this.

Absolutely wonderful

This recording is divine, and really captures the energy and vitality of a live production. I love this ballet and have seen it in theatres worldwide, and it is the music that really makes it for me. Valery Gergiev leads the LSO in their most magnificent and exciting playing. In my opinion, Gergiev is the only living conductor worthy of bringing Prokofiev’s spectacular ballet to life. I'd give it six stars if I could!

Valery Gergiev emerged in the 1980s as one of the most exciting new conductors, particularly of opera and ballet, and has maintained and enhanced his reputation ever since. He is also known for the rather gruff, unshaven appearance he cultivates. Born in Moscow to Ossetian parents, he showed tremendous musical talent in early childhood. Deciding while still in his teens that he wanted to become a conductor, Gergiev entered the conducting class of Ilya Musin at the Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) Conservatory....
