iTunes Review

The Violent Femmes burst out of the wilds of Milwaukee in 1983, a street-corner acoustic trio led by a bratty bundle of raw nerves named Gordon Gano. With their self-titled debut, they delivered one of the great proto-alternative rock albums of the Reagan Era. Even today, the music on this album-- as crisp as a halftime marching band, as crazed as a hardcore punk unit - hasn't lost its freshness or bite. Gano sings and strums guitar with hyperkinetic zeal, while bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor De Lorenzo pump out clean, tight rhythms. From the cheerful perversity of "Blister in the Sun" to the wistful dreaminess of "Good Feeling," every track's a rough-cut gem. Whether he's festering with frustration ("Prove My Love") or teetering on the brink of suicide ("Kiss Off"), Gano's lyrics are smart, stinging, and winningly sincere. Violent Femmes' low-watt, high-energy tunes will leave you panting for more.

Buy this album!

One of the greatest written albums you'll ever hear. It has everything, Catchy Bass-lines, Simple drum beats and lyrics that range from comic to heartfelt. It has a cool sound that could fit on many a movie soundtrack. If it's stripped down, great songwriting you're after, look no further.

Formative album of my teenage years

This is a fantastic album, I bought it on vinyl when I was 16 and practically wore it out I listened to it so many times. It has everything you could want when you're feeling like a lonely miserable adolescent, and still rings a lot of bells now I'm older and happier. It's tight and crisp, original and tuneful, heartfelt and funny. Excellent.

Still Fresh

Just heard this again after owning it in the 80's and can't beleive how fresh it sounds. A genuine 5 stars that is based on this tight little album.

The textbook American cult band of the 1980s, the Violent Femmes captured the essence of teen angst with remarkable precision; raw and jittery, the trio's music found little commercial success but nonetheless emerged as the soundtrack for the lives of troubled adolescents the world over. The group formed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the early '80s, and comprised singer/guitarist Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie and percussionist Victor DeLorenzo; Ritchie originated the band's oxymoronic name, adopting...
