Album Review

Star pianist Lang Lang joins star conductor Valery Gergiev and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater to perform two star-making works of the piano and orchestra repertoire. Both works contain themes that are very familiar to many. The third movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2 contains the "Full Moon and Empty Arms" theme, while the Rhapsody has the romantic 18th variation that is frequently heard in film soundtracks. The real attraction here, however, is the combination of two spectacular musicians who each have their own following and their own distinct style of interpretation. Lang Lang is known for being highly individual and subjective, and Gergiev is known for his attention to detail and the vitality of his readings. The resulting combination here is guaranteed to be unique and, at times, surprising., Rovi

Paganini Rhapsody ruined by gaps between tracks

I bought this album in the iTunes sale. It's aways interesting to hear another interpretation of Rach's 2nd. Although Lang Lang's is interesting (although one always harks back to Ashkenazy's seminal recordings with Previn & Haitink), the reason I fee compelled to write this review is to warn others that the Paganini Rhapsody is effectively ruined by 'gaps' between the 29 tracks it has been inappropriately broken down into on this recording. I own a latest generation iPod Classic, and the minute (but perceptable) gaps between each of these tracks when listenng on the iPod makes this part of the recording unlistenable. The situation is even worse when the recording is burnt to CD,where iTunes places a 2 seond gap between each track (although this can be changed in the options). In short, 2-3 stars for the performances, but 1 star overall due to unlistenable (and preventable) flaws in presentation.

Truely Outstanding!

Yet again Lang Lang doen't cease to amaze me with his undefined skill and perfection. You'll be missing out "big time" if you dont buy this! I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO PURCHASE THIS ALBUM.. And what great value it is!

ov or off

Amusing that the composer is spelt differently in the composer listing compared to the album cover. Anyway, Lang Lang is never less than exciting and this is another great show of style

Genre: Classical

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Chinese pianist Lang Lang was born on June 14, 1982, in Shenyang, China. Labeled "the world's most successful pianist" by German newspaper Die Welt am Sonntag, Lang Lang's fame has by far eclipsed that of most classical performers. Hearing Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in a Tom & Jerry cartoon inspired him to learn the piano at the tender age of two; at the age of five, he already gave his first public performance and won the Shenyang Piano Competition. He entered the Peking Conservatory...
