Editors’ Notes

When you’ve been playing in the same band for nearly two decades, it’s sometimes necessary to change directions. A trip to record in Austin, Texas, was the impetus for Mystery Jets’ sonic shape-shifting. Radlands shows the London-based band shedding its electro-tinged and '80s-inspired leanings for twangy indie pop, starting with the opening title track. “You Had Me at Hello” replaces the band’s prior penchant for keyboard-tweaking with the rootsy tones of vintage guitars and tube amps. Singer Blaine Harrison muses on an urban cowboy’s account of patronizing Nevada's Mustang Ranch Nevada over Crazy Horse–sounding guitar leads and country-rock backing vocals reminiscent of post-Parsons Byrds recordings. They swap out electric guitars for acoustics in the opening of “The Ballad of Emmerson Lonestar”, which plays like an English counterpart to Los Angeles’ Beachwood Sparks once the weepy pedal steel and three-part vocal harmonies chime in. The instantly winsome “Greatest Hits” stylishly struts on a “Stuck in the Middle with You” groove and a sharpened, Kinks-esque Village Green Preservation Society wit.

Customer Reviews

Listen to a level person.

Ok, this is a brilliant album, but I still maintain that I prefer TwentyOne purely because theirs a mix of slow and fast songs (Hideaway+flakes for example) whereas in this album, it's all around the same tempo, which is fairly slow. Definitely great, but not the best.

Mystery jets Radlands

When things didn't look any better than the album twenty one, these boys managed to go above and beyond with inviting distorted guitar riffs and those meaningful lyrics Blaine Harrison is so good at achieving. Their gig in May defiantly is looking good with songs like these on the set list!

After hearing some of the new album live i couldnt wait to own this! Love it!

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The Syd Barrett-worshiping indie outfit Mystery Jets formed in the early '90s when the group's shock-headed frontman, Blaine Harrison, was only 12. The band was initially called the Misery Jets, in honor of the Heathrow-bound jets that habitually roared over their native Eel Pie Island, but they changed their name when Blaine (who, again, was very young at the time) misspelled "misery." The Mystery Jets were essentially a family project, with Blaine on drums; Blaine's dad, Henry Harrison, on bass;...
