Album Review

An inspiring debut of well-crafted adult pop, heavily under the influence of Prefab Sprout, it was originally released by CBS Records in the U.K. in May 1987. Raintown was released in the U.S. by Columbia Records in March 1988.

Customer Reviews

A bona fide classic

Deacon Blue were a much underrated band, with excellent songwriting and musicianship. Ricky Ross and Lorraine Mackintosh sing together so beautifully. I don't think they got better than on this debut album; check out the superb Raintown, Loaded, When Will You, Chocolate Girl, Dignity, Love's Great Fears... yeah, OK, listen to it all.

No Mean City...

Glasgow in the 80's...As an Englishman up there on missionary work (just kidding folks!) I was captivated by the sounds of the city...The Blue Nile (obviously); Simple Minds; The Associates; Orange Juice... and Deacon Blue! Whilst perhaps a bit less street cred than some of their contemporaries, they built a passionate, loyal fan-base built squarely upon scintilating live performances and cracking songwriting, cleverly arranged. This album, for me, represents their best writing and although 'When the World Knows Your Name' delivered more single chart success, there is a more subtle hand at work on Raintown. If you don't have it - get it! Yours sincerely, one of the passionate, loyal fan-base.

Moody & Magnificent

A great album with some soulful and heart-wrenching lyrics. Well-crafted pop songs/ballads delivered with some excellent supporting female vocals giving a stimulating extra touch/feel. Love'sGreat Fears is a stunner. Raintown got plenty and Chocalte Girl is a simple, touching lament. Moody and magnificent.

Taking their name from a Steely Dan song, Deacon Blue are one of the best unknown bands in Scotland. Formed in 1985, Deacon Blue performed their first concert as the opening act for the Waterboys' premier show in England. With the vocals of singer/songwriter Ricky Ross backed by jazz and soul-inspired melodies, the group recorded several British hits in the late '80s. Their success, however, failed to carry over to American audiences. Frustrated by their inability to secure international popularity,...
