Top Salome

I've listened to this recording many times, because this is the best sung Salome I've heard. Cheryl Studer is magnificent, big enough not to be drowned by Strauss' louder orchestral outbursts but with fantastic delicate moments, probably not possible in the opera house but then, this is a studio performance. Bryn Terfel gives great voice as Jokanaan, and matches Studer in their shared scenes. Herod and (especially)Herodias are a bit past their prime but Salome is the gal you listen to, and the final scene is stupendous. Listen to it on headphones and under the raging of the orchestra you'll hear salome hawk up a loogie as Jokanaan's severed head comes out of the cistern, yummy.
