Album Review

Steamhammer didn't gather the international fame and attention that some of the other blues-rock-based British hard rock bands of the later 1960s and early '70s did, but there's no reason they shouldn't have — they were no worse than most and certainly better than many, and while they could play Cream-styled blues-rock by the numbers, they weren't afraid to branch out from that and eventually move in a more jazz direction. In all, they recorded four albums, putting out their last, Speech, in 1972. This two-disc set collects the best and signature tracks from those albums in one package, making it an excellent way to catch up on this interesting and often intriguing band's recorded legacy.

Blues-rockers Steamhammer formed in 1968 in the British town of Worthing. The band was made up of several blues and folk band veterans who were interested in playing something new. The band was pulled onto the road almost directly after their inception by blues legend Freddie King, who needed a backing band for his European tour.
