the folk album of 2006

A stunningly original, spectacular no-holds-barred album of traditional English songs, from the eleven piece band centred around John Spiers and Jon Boden. Dramatic, inventive arrangements incorporating brass, strings and woodwind, performed with exuberance, verve and swagger guaranteed to make you smile. Brilliant!

Superb - Thankls Jools

Having seen this band on Later with Jools Holland on Friday, i had to go out and buy their album, and have not regretted it since, it is a mixture of upbeat and mellow accordingly, and is a great additions to any folkies music collection, as my history teacher told me its accessible Beard folk

Compelling, competent and crackers

Shrewd, jovial, witty, eccentric, and sometimes bravely barmy, there is something uniquely English about the execution of this music as well as the material. If you expect to love this album on first hearing, don't be deterred if your first reaction is non-plussed bewilderment. This is an album you will keep coming back to listen to again and you will always be wearing a grin by the end of it. Really highly recommended.

Although they began and continued to work as a duo, John Spiers (melodeon) and Jon Boden (fiddle and vocals) had a vision of a larger sound for their music. In 2004 they put together Bellowhead (the name derived from their album Bellow) to play the Oxford Folk Festival. The 11-piece group was an immediate success, its mix of strings and brass virtually unprecedented in traditional English folk music.
