Mammy and Daddy to The Darkness

Of course, the term 'prog rock' was unknown before 1976 but even in 1971, those of us who loved the music (and called it just 'rock'), never thought of Curved Air as 'one of those bands'. They were always a one-off, and rightly hailed as a brilliant burst of rock genius even in an age that was full of them. It's not too difficult to see where Queen, Focus, and The Darkness got their chops. Sonja Krystina's vocals are Grace Slick with a glam edge, and the ensemble playing of the rest of the band is polished, vivacious, and dynamic. Their sense of adventure even in an age where freedom of expression was fostered far more generously than it is now, was exuberant. They - unlike the dire efforts of ELP, Deep Purple, and The Nice - make a classical-rock fusion seem not only acceptable but even something worth further exploration. Oh, and if you ever see a copy of that picture disc at a record fair, buy it and frame it. Don't play it though - the sound quality beneath that psychedelic paint is horrible; the plain Warner label version is just fine.

One of the most dramatically accomplished of all the bands lumped into Britain's late-'60s prog explosion, Curved Air was formed in early 1970 by violinist Darryl Way, a graduate of the Royal College of Music, and two former members of Sisyphus, keyboard player Francis Monkman and drummer Florian Pilkington-Miksa. Adding bassist Robert Martin, the band named itself from avant-garde composer Terry Riley's A Rainbow in Curved Air, a touchstone that would inform much of their early work. The quartet...
