Oh for ****'s sake...

So Madvillainy 2, the Madvillainy Instrumentals and 2 EPs worth of Madvillainy remixes are available on UK iTunes now, and still no sign of the original! Sort it out! Anyway, this stopgap to hold us over till the "real" Madvillainy 2 (WHAT IT'S COMING) isn't that great to be honest. But it was never meant to be; merely a remix of the original that Madlib made to keep himself amused. As such it's just the excellently off-kilter rhymes from the original paired with sterling production from Madlib's endless well of genius. If you haven't heard the original Madvillainy you might well love it. For me, however, the original was so perfect that something about this release just feels odd, like mashing together pieces of a non-fitting jigsaw to create a slightly warped image. It's still a pleasant enough listen, it just doesn't have the "insta-classic" feel of its incredible predecessor. Which iTunes really should make available.

Madvillain is yet another collaboration by Stones Throw big shot Madlib, this time with masked MC MF Doom. Madlib, who had been listening to Doom's Operation: Doomsday (1999), was impressed by the MC's lyrics and beats and contacted Doom to talk about the possibility of working together. Though Doom had never heard of Madlib at that point, as soon as he heard the DJ's work he agreed immediately.
