Editors’ Notes

Like many great rock duos before them, Royal Blood manage to create a sound that’s greater then the sum of their parts. On the outfit’s self-titled debut album, Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher combine for an unabashedly heavy blend of bristling riffs and deep, canyon-like grooves that have made fans out of Jimmy Page, Arctic Monkeys and Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis. Using an armada of pedals and amps, Kerr plays a bass guitar like a standard six-string; this creative choice lends an inherent, unrelenting menace to Royal Blood. On the outstanding opener, “Out of the Black”, Thatcher’s sternum-rattling drum work is Dave Grohl–like in both its power and precision, while Kerr’s colossal bass and vocal turns recall the arena-ready theatrics of Muse’s Matthew Bellamy. In the squeal and squall of “Careless” and “Figure It Out”, Kerr conjures the corroded, wonderfully pugnacious guitar sounds of iconic two-piece frontman Jack White. No matter their reference points, Royal Blood have an attack that’s ruthlessly direct.

Customer Reviews

Eagerly anticipated

Based on the 4 songs I’ve already got, (Little Monster, Out of the Black, Come on Over and Hole), this band are EXACTLY what is needed right now. Cuts right through the mass produced factory slop which is most often found choking the airwaves and charts. Fantastic sound for a two piece… how does he do that with just a bass guitar?? Makes me proud to be British! Along with Darlia and Lyger, Royal Blood are set to do some good things in the music industry. Heavy QOTSA influence and that’s a good thing. I’ve pre-ordered already and haven’t been this excited over a new release for years. Good job guys… I’m sure you’ll be recognised and get what you deserve… fans. I’m one of them.

NO CHOICE BUT TO BUY IT

My name is Sam and Ben (the drummer) is a family friend of ours and I've been obsessed from the start... I've heard all the songs that are on the album that they have openly played and they are awesome! They're honestly legen *wait for it* dary! Honestly it's worth the money for just 3 of these songs let alone all of them! AMAZING LOVE ROYAL BLOOD

Excited!

Little Monster, Out Of The Black, Come On Over are brilliant. Hope the rest of the album is just as good as these three!
Already worth the money from just those three songs.

Biography

Formed: January, 2013 in Brighton, Sussex, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Brighton duo Royal Blood channeled the blues-rock dynamism of the likes of the White Stripes, the Black Keys, and Two Gallants, yet they amped up the ferocity and volume with scuzzy riffs and blustering energy. Comprising drummer Ben Thatcher and bassist/vocalist Mike Kerr, the two-piece formed at the beginning of 2013 when Kerr returned from a trip to Australia and Thatcher picked him up from the airport. They managed to play their first show the very next day and continued to write new material...
