Six previous albums have given Robbie Williams a staggeringly successful pop career but he’s often hinted that there’s something more experimental in him. Rudebox is that record. The title track jumps into old-school hip-hop and electro with its skeletal punch and a hook borrowed from Sly & Robbie. From thereon in, it’s a vibrant, electronic, slightly unhinged romp that includes two Pet Shop Boys collaborations, some Mark Ronson-produced electro-funk (the excellent “Lovelight”), and–for old time’s sake–pure pop gorgeousness (“Summertime”).
