nice to hear steve again on a bnl album

BNL hits with some of the rare ones with steve page…..

Whatever we have left

I've just listened to the album on iTunes prior to buying, and from what I've heard will not be buying it. "Stop us if you've heard this one before" should really have been labelled "kicking a dead horse" or "help yourself to the dregs" because that seems to be what this album is made up of. Songs that quite rightly never made the final cut on an album or demo tracks that offer very little sparkle. Perhaps another name for this album could be "Based on our back catalogue alone we think some of you may just be gullable enough to buy this album"

A mixed bag

Bit of a mixed bag, this one. It really does stretch the definition of rarities – chances are that if you're a die-hard fan you will not only have heard several of these before but may actually own them. And frankly most of the demos and alternative versions are just too similar to the final product to hold much interest.

That said, there is some good stuff among the meh. The Old Apartment demo is just lovely, Shake Your Rump is classic live Ladies, Teenage Wasteland and Long While perform that traditional BNL trick of making you smile and feel sad at the same time, and I love the live version of Same Thing, the studio version of which I was never that keen on.

In short, it's the sort of album that iTunes' you-can-buy-individual-tracks approach was made for, and I'd strongly suggest listening to the samples and purchasing tracks accordingly. Be warned, though, it will make you miss Steve all over again. Here's hoping he's getting some cash from the sales of this, and from the latest greatest hits album for that matter.

By combining humor with an eclectic mix of folk and pop/rock, the Barenaked Ladies enjoyed considerable popularity in their native Canada before rising to international status with 1998's "One Week." Vocalists Ed Robertson and Steve Page launched the band in the late '80s as an acoustic act, traveling to different college campuses and playing warm-up gigs for comedy troupes. These early shows played an important role in the group's foundation, as Robertson and Page began injecting their performances...
