Album Review

In 1994, Philippine independent Vicor Records released T. L. Ako Sa 'Yo (I'm Truly in Love With You), a compilation of songs recorded by vocal group Cinderella for the label in the 1970s. The group comprises both male and females, but the females dominate most of the songs. The music is characterized by a sweet, innocent sound. The melodies are slow and tender, and the songs are sung with gentle innocence that borders on being campy. The female voices sound like those of little girls, adding to the innocence (and camp), as heard in the opening tender ballad "T. L. Ako Sa 'Yo." While the album's overall ambience is sweet and tender, the songs are distinctive and retain an individual uniqueness. "Sa Aking Pag-iisa" (When I'm Alone), for example, is made in the same musical style as the aforementioned "T.L. Ako Sa 'Yo" but is distinctive and has its own musical personality. "Ang Boyfriend Kong Baduy" (My Boyfriend Is a Square) is a charming, moderately spirited tune, and contains attractive backing harmonies. Several songs, including "T. L. Ako Sa 'Yo," "Superstar Ng Buhay Ko" (Superstar of My Life), and "Nakikinig Ang Buong Pilipinas" (The Entire Is Listening), contain steel pedal-like guitar fills. "Ang Boyfriend Ko" has a guitar line similar to that of Bread's "Baby, I'm-a Want You." The song itself, though, is entirely different. The closing, "Bato Sa Buhangin" (Rocks in the Sun), is one of the group's most popular numbers.

By the mid-'90s, the group's mass popularity had subsided due to professional setbacks and perceived changes in taste. But they continued to tour regularly well into the 21st century. Cinderella was founded in Philadelphia, PA, in 1983 by singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist Tom Keifer (born January 26, 1961) and bassist...
