Editors’ Notes

Secret Treaties, Blue Oyster Cult’s third album, is considered by many hardcore fans to be their finest achievement as it brings all the band’s strengths together into one tight package. Allen Lanier’s keyboards take on added presence, while the guitars of Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma illustrate these tunes with memorable riffs and solos that light the night sky. “Career of Evil” and “Dominance and Submission” have the makings of anthems (even if the band’s lyrics remain as obscure, weird and sometimes outright silly as ever), but it’s the moodier terrain of “Subhuman” and “Astronomy” that solidify the group’s otherworldly mystique. While the hard rock world of 1974 kept leaning towards louder and heavier presentations, BOC were careful to avoid the potential dead end by leaning on their psychedelic origins and interpolating unusual textures alongside the standard chug. “Cagey Cretins” uses both the romantic swoon of ‘60s girl groups and the power chords of heavy metal to let us know “Well it’s so lonely in the state of Maine.” The expanded edition includes outtakes from the sessions originally deemed outside the context of the finished album and a psychedelic attempt at “Born to Be Wild.”

Customer Reviews

THE best rock album bar none!

If all you've ever heard is "Don't Fear The Reaper" then I urge you to get this album. Every song is a classic and Albert Bouchard was at the top of his game co-writing classics such as Dominance and Submission (classic live track) , Flaming Telepaths and the menacing Career of Evil. Listen to the previews, you'll love it!

Blue Öyster Cult was the thinking man's heavy metal group. Put together on a college campus by a couple of rock critics, it maintained a close relationship with a series of literary figures (often in the fields of science fiction and horror), including Eric Von Lustbader, Patti Smith, Michael Moorcock, and Stephen King, while turning out some of the more listenable metal music of the early and mid-'70s. The band that became Blue Öyster Cult was organized in 1967 at Stony Brook College on Long Island...
