This One's for You

On This One’s For You (1976), Barry Manilow further refined his trademark mixture of rousing upbeat numbers and intimate ballads. By this time he had established a phenomenally strong bond with his audience, who embraced him both as a masterful performer and as a lovable Everyman. The album’s title track speaks volumes about his appeal — Manilow could sing to a vast audience and still make his songs seem intended for that one special person listening out in the crowd. “See The Show Again” and “Weekend In New England” likewise touch a resonantly romantic chord. Moving beyond the moonlight and roses, Barry blasts through such jubilant numbers as the buoyant “Daybreak” and the 1940s swing invocation “Jump Shout Boogie.” If there’s a central tune here, it’s the chart-topping single “Looks Like We Made It,” a bittersweet toast to love, fate and acceptance. Barry’s Brooklyn-bred persona — at once sophisticated and starry-eyed — gives this album its unity and heart. This One’s For You is prime Manilow, a valentine of an album sent out to each and every fan.
