Album Review

Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2 is a more difficult and challenging album than Aphex Twin's previous collection. The music is all texture; there are only the faintest traces of beats and forward movement. Instead, all of these untitled tracks are long, unsettling electronic soundscapes, alternately quiet and confrontational; although most of the music is rather subdued, it is never easy listening. While some listeners may find this double-disc album dull (both discs run over 70 minutes), many listeners will be intrigued and fascinated by the intricately detailed music of Aphex Twin.

Please Read Before Purchasing!!!!!!!

Be warned..the best track..by far is a track called "Stone in Focus" which for some reason is missing. I know of many people who bought this album simply because of that track...it is worthless without it!

Peacefull

I work on maternity and this is lovely to bring baby's into the world too.

Incredible

The music here may be "ambient", but this is not easy listening by any stretch of the imagination. Some of these tracks are soothing and tranquil (Rhubarb, Lichen), others are harshly dissonant (Hankie,Grass) and some are just downright.. scary (Tree). But almost all the time, this is thoroughly fascinating music, unlike much else ever made, not even by Aphex Twin himself. Recommended for fans of Aphex Twin, but not novies looking for a starting point. I suggest SAW 85-92 or Richard D James for that purpose.

Exploring the experimental possibilities inherent in acid and ambience, the two major influences on home-listening techno during the late '80s, Richard D. James' recordings as Aphex Twin brought him more critical praise than any other electronic artist. Though his first major single, "Didgeridoo," was a piece of acid thrash designed to tire dancers during his DJ sets, ambient stylists and critics later took him under their wing for Selected Ambient Works 85-92, a sublime touchstone in the field of...
